Setting Nokia 2115i as Modem
I bought Nokia 2115i several months ago. I bought it because I want to use Fren as my mobile phone service provider. Fren currently have a promotion of cheap phone call between Fren users, it cost me around Rp. 1.400/hour which is very cheap.
Another benefit of using Fren is I can access Internet for Rp. 5/KB, which is the cheapest price for volume based Internet connection compared with other mobile phone service provider.
People said that Nokia 2115i can’t be used as a modem, so it can’t be used to connect to the Internet
At first I didn’t know this issue, I bought 2115i instead of 2116 because simply it’s cheaper than 2116.
Few months ago I tried to install Nokia PC Suite which have a utility to connect the phone device to computer. The phone is connected seamlessly and I can add/delete contacts from the phone device from PC Suite. PC Suite also have feature to connect to the Internet but it said that no modem detected, although PC Suite do recognize the phone series. Because of this problem, I thought that it’s true that 2115i can’t be used as a modem, but I was wrong.
Today I tried again to install 2115i as a modem. I borrow DKU-5 data cable from my friend so I can connect the phone to my computer. This time I don’t use Nokia PC Suite, I use manual way installing the modem driver which you can download from Fren’s website here. Below are the steps for installing the modem driver:
- Choose Program > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options
- Choose the tab Modem, Click Add
- Check “Don’t detect my modem”
- Choose “Have Disk”. When asked, find the location where you saved the downloaded file nmpCDMA2000_1x.inf, click OK
- Choose “Nokia CDMA2000 1X 3G Packet Data Modem”
- Choose the selected port (don’t choose all ports)
- Nokia modem is installed in your computer
After installing the modem driver, you’ll need to create a new internet connection setting on your windows, so you can connect to the internet using Fren services. Below are the steps for creating new internet connection on Windows XP:
- Choose Program > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Connections
- Choose File > New Connections
- Click next, choose “Connect to the Internet”
- Choose “Set up My Connection manually”
- Choose “Connect using a dial-up modem”
- Choose “Nokia CDMA2000 1X 3G Packet Data Modem”
- Put in Fren as the name of your ISP
- Put in #777 as the ISP dial up number
- Choose Anyone’s use for this connection
- Put in m8 (lowercase) as user name and password.
- Check “Add Shortcut”, click “Finish”
After doing steps above, I can connected to the Internet using 2115i as my modem
happy me. What I need to do now is buying a DKU-5 data cable so I can connect to the Internet at my boarding house.

if you using Nokia PC Suite, it will not detect a modem on nokia 2115i. I already wrote the steps to install the modem driver for 2115i above. you can download the driver from fren’s website, i supply the link above.
to Hikmat
the browsing experience can’t be faster than ADSL connection. but it’s enough if you only need it to check email when you doesn’t have internet connection

Have you install the cable driver? I forgot to mention it on My post.
Also, not all cable can be used for internet connection, I’m not sure whether CA-42 can be used or not.
Note: DKU-5 is also an USB cable

Dear Markus,
I used Nokia 6015i and I enjoy it with StarOne. I used Fren as well, but in my experience, StarOne is faster than Fren. And for StarOne Prepaid, it cost me only Rp. 3/kb.

Dewo

Denny, any port will be ok i believe.
i don’t know about this ca-42 cable. may be it doesn’t support internet data transfer. try use DKU-5.
can you try install Nokia PC Suite to check whether you PC can connect to the phone. If it’s can connected, then uninstall the PC Suite and try to setup the internet connection using steps above.
i use the same phone with you 2115i from Tracfone, with black casing.

Dear all.
I use the same phone like markus’, and i have my phone connected with ca-42 cables, it’s connected allright but the connection is really really slow…can anybody tell me why?
and to denny, i had the same problem like you did, try to make the com port number for the modem the same as which port you plugged your cable on, check it at device manager on your computer. but remember that you have to unintall the nokia pc suite first.

Hello Ananto, about the slow connection, that is what you get for Fren connection. it also depends on the BTS traffic. some times i can get enough speed to open simple website, but with all images turn off
my friend said that if you using EVDO you can get better connection speed, but then you’ll need to invest some more money to buy a cell phone that support EV-DO or buy a PCMCIA modem.

salam kenal,
akhirnya gw berhasil konek internet pake nokia 2115 & kabel dku5 non-ori
sepertinya ada beberapa cara, tapi berikut cara gw:
1. konek cable data trus install drivernya (gw pake arkmicro, tapi juga ada yg pake prolific or texas instrument -> tergantung kabelnya). liat com port yg dipake melalui “device manager”
2. install nokia pc suite terbaru (v. 6.84)
3. konek HP dgn kabel data, nyalain pc suite, pilih “manage connection” - kasi tanda di “serial cable” - pilih “configure” - pilih com port yg di “point 1? - klik “OK” - klik “get connected”. Nokia 2115i tersambung dgn pc suite.
4. pilih “manage connection” - kosongkan tanda di “serial cable” klik “close”
5. install modem (persis seperti yg ditulis mr. markus - gw jg pake “nmpCDMA2000_1x.inf”. jgn lupa masukkan extra initialization setting “+crm=1;+cso=33? (tanpa tanda “)
6. voila!! modem sudah bisa digunakan
mudah2an bisa berguna bt yg lain.
